The Church of the Ascension is a “smoke free” Building. Softball Ascension Angels softball team is an annual event in the late spring. We play other local churches in a Norfolk Church league. Players of all abilities are welcome. Supper Club Groups of 6-8 adults gather for good food and friendship in homes. Young Adults (20s and 30s) The young adults group meets once a month in the home of one of our members. We share a meal and explore issues of faith and spirituality. Acolytes The acolytes light the candles, carry the cross and torches during the worship service processions, help with the offerings, and assist the priest at the altar during Holy Communion. Anyone age 9 or older is welcome. Altar Guild Members prepare for the services of the church by caring for the altar, linens, vestments, vessels, and decorations for special occasions. Choir The adult choir sings at the 11:00 a.m. Sunday service and rehearses on Thursday evenings. The group welcomes volunteers. Flower Guild Volunteers arrange flowers weekly for the retable. They also make special arrangements to be sold at various church functions. Handbells The Handbell Choir is a component of the Choir Ministries at the Church of the Ascension. Handbells offer the opportunity to provide an additional “voice” to the worship service in close collaboration with the Adult Choir Lay Eucharistic Ministers Lay Eucharistic Ministers are available to take Holy Communion to members who are unable to attend services at the church. Lay Readers and Chalicers Lay Readers read the lessons and psalm for the week. Chalicers licensed by the bishop read lessons, prayers and administer the cup of consecrated wine. This group meets every third Saturday at 7:30 a.m. for Holy Communion and breakfast in addition to a short program. Senior EYC EYC stands for Episcopal Youth Community. The Senior EYC group is open to young people in grades 9 through 12. Meetings are held on most Sunday evenings from 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. and include food, fun, fellowship, and programs. Members also attend Convocation and Diocesan events. Junior EYC The Junior EYC is open to all in grades 6 through 8 and meets most Sunday evenings from 5:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. We try to do something fun “outside” the church once a month.
