Announcements for 1 August 2010
VBS: Nearly 50 Voyagers sailed on our High Seas Expedition this past week during Vacation Bible School. Many, many thanks to all who donated items, time, money and effort to make this a success.
Next Sunday, August 8, we will celebrate a children’s-focused service at 10:00, so be aware of some modifications to our usual liturgy! We hope to see a nice turn-out of our children to help us worship in uplifting and creative ways.
FORE!!!!
That is the cry you will hear on August 6 as 120+ golfers take part in the 19th Annual Red Marsh Memorial Church of the Ascension 18 Holey Open. If you are interested in playing as an individual or putting a team in, please contact me. Or you could help the cause by being a hole sponsor ($100) or perhaps you have a nice article we could use for a door prize. Take note of the information below and please call if you have any questions.
When: Noon shotgun start on August 6
Where: Ocean View Golf Course
Cost: $40 per player includes golf and cart, hot dogs, barbecue, and beverages after play ends at the course. Contact Phillip Todd.
Congratulations to Andy and Elisa Willoughby on the birth of Gabriel Logan Willoughby on July 21. Logan is also the grandson of Bruce and Diane Shepheard.
Congratulations to Amy Lewis and Jason Abercrombie who were married in Charleston, South Carolina, on July 26th. Amy is the daughter of Betsy Hussey.
A thank you: I would like to personally thank all of you for the love and support that you gave me and Kathy Brasington during her recovery from back surgery over the past few weeks; she is recovering nicely! A special thanks to Samantha and Nancy Morris, and Sarah Munford for their time and visits! Regards! Pam Todesco
YESSIR (younger adults) will be meeting on August 9th at O’Sullivan’s Wharf on Colley Avenue.
Mission Trip Thank you: We would like to thank our mission trip sponsors with dessert, pictures and conversation. The evening will begin at 6:30 pm on August 8th. Sponsors will be receiving invitations soon. Please RSVP to Lynn Farlin.
Pentecost Pictures for Sale: Bob Postle has delivered the first set of pictures that were ordered. If you would like a copy of the 9×24 picture, they will be for sale for $20. Have You Lost Anything! In the kitchen that is. On the afternoon of June 17th all of the strays were put out in Rose Hall with a sign that was to be enhanced with a balloon to call attention to them. To my surprise on the morning of the 18th they were gone! Since then some (all?) have turned up back in the kitchen, however they are no longer all in one place, so please hunt for your lost items – or lost food especially chips. With the end of Bible School it is time to clean up and clear out the kitchen for the fall season. Please Look !
Down to the sea in ships . . . . That’s where the magazines, jigsaws, books, & games left in the box in the hall go. When the box fills up the aforementioned items are taken to the Seamen’s Friends Society where they are bundled up and taken to the merchant vessels that come to our port. This ministry to merchant seamen has been active in Norfolk for over 40 years. For the past 9 years most crews can not leave their ships, making this small gesture, even more meaningful to crews who have only limited recreational facilities aboard their ships.
Getting info: As you probably know by now, the Jamestown Cross has undergone changes. While it has a great new look, it will not be published as frequently as it was in times past. However, for those of you who are online, there is a wonderful news update that goes out every week. All you have to do is sign up for it. Go to diosova.org. Near the bottom of the page on the right side is a box that says: “Sign up for email news.” Enter your email address and click on go. It will take you to a page that verifies your email address and lists your preferences. As news becomes available, it lands in your inbox: the weekly updates, prayer requests, letters from the Bishop (most recently about Win Lewis’s departure). You can always unsubscribe if you don’t like it. Go ahead….give it a try.
Please pray for James Hogge. He is the homeless man that has been around Ascension for the last few years. He has been in Norfolk City Jail for a year and a half and has been transferred to Mecklenburg Prison in Boydton. He has been sentenced to eight years for parole violations. Any cards would be welcome. Be sure to use the church address as a return address. One day he was saying how much he appreciated cards from folks. He said to me. “there are so many guys in here who have no one that cares and that is rough.” To be honest, if he writes back and asks for money, please don’t let that deter you from letting him know he is thought of and prayed for. However, if you did want to send him money for use for personal items please donate to our rectors’ discretionary fund marked for James Hogge. James reads his Bible everyday and talks to the people around him about his faith. While in jail he was known for his beliefs, and inmates—who wrote his letters for him—often added a note about what he meant to them. Since James is 73 years old and non violent he may be transferred to another prison in a month or so. IF you have any questions please let me know.– Sally Miller

From Christ & St. Luke’s newsletter: Did you know that the internet provides some great tips on ways we can help preserve God’s wonderful creation, this earth? The net lists a number of sites available for recycling materials that otherwise end up cluttering our world:
Earth911.com: a section called “Recyclo-pedia” is divided into product categories such as paper and batteries, explains how to get rid of them, and also lists 100,000 locations for recycling used goods.
Recyclebank.com: helps promote recycling. Gift cards and coupons from one of 1,500 retail businesses encourage recycling. Points are earned by scheduling pickup of household junk and old electronics. Call 1-800-GOT-JUNK.
Elmersgluecrew.com: the glue manufacturer gives those who recycle old glue bottles and sticks a chance to win school supplies. It pays to recycle!
Laptops Needed: (from Kendall Abbott, Mission of the Holy Spirit):
I am writing today to ask for your help. As you may know, I mentor several young men/boys and 3 of them are college bound in the fall. One is going to VA Tech (Engineer); the other two are going to VA State (one to be a pharmacist). The two going to VSU have made dramatic changes the last three years of high school: going from skipping school and making poor grades to being accepted at college. They choose not to become another statistic like most every other young black male in their public housing neighborhood. One has even joined the Coast Guard Reserve to help pay for college. He wrote on his college essay his dream is to become a pharmacist and buy a home to get his mother and sister out of the projects. They are remarkable young men who–given the opportunity–choose success rather than a life of dependence.
I am looking for assistance in getting laptop computers for two of the boys to take to college. VSU recommends a laptop that has Wi-Fi capability and MS Office 7 or better. I am not in a position to buy them myself before the beginning of the semester. If you have any resources that can help, I would appreciate whatever you are able to provide.
God Bless, Kendall Abbott rkabbott@cox.net
Fall Camp 2010: Brought to you by the Tri-Diocesan Council on Aging, a sojourn at Shrine Mont on October 25-28. Bishop Carol Gallagher will be the keynoter. There will also be various workshops. The brochures are on the bulletin board if you are interested.

The number of monthly requests remains high with many returning and also new client families in Norfolk.
