Announcements for 5 September 2010

Next week, (September 12) we will be back on the “regular” schedule with Sunday School kickoff at 9:30 in Rose Hall and the second service at 11:00.  The Adult Forum begins on this Sunday and will be in Rose Hall also.   Don’t forget to mark your calendars.

Adult Form: The early years of the church marked a time prior to the establishment of creeds and widely accepted beliefs.  The foremost (and highly controversial) thinker of those first centuries was a man named Origen who helped define much of what the church debated as the truth about God. His life is an intriguing story and the hard questions he addressed still take us to the heart of our faith as Christians.  This class, “The Ancient Wisdom of Origen” will offer a time to reflect on our own fundamental questions of faith and will meet in the lounge after the Sunday School kickoff.

Acolyte Meeting September 12th after church (12:30) in the lounge.  All current acolytes and anyone wishing to become an acolyte please attend.  Will be short – 15 minutes.

Coming up for EYC:

Sunday, September 12th   4th Annual Water Wars! Come prepared to get wet and have fun.  The Jr. EYC will meet from 4-5:30pm. The Sr. EYC will meet from 5-6:30pm.  Dinner will be at 5pm.

Sunday, September 26th Meeting at the Church. The Jr. EYC will meet from 5-6:30pm. The Sr. EYC will meet from 6-7:30pm.  Dinner will be at 6pm.

Young Adults:

YESSIR (20 something’s) will meet at Foster Meng’s home at September 8th at 7pm.  We will be watching and discussing the movie Saved. More information can be found on our Facebook page.

YAFFO (young adults) will meet on Sept 11th at 6:30pm.  Samantha will be hosting the dinner.  Information about the discussion will be posted on the blog and sent via e-mail. If you would like further details, please contact Samantha.

Book Club The book selection for the month of September is Blind Side by Michael Lewis. It follows Michael Oher’s life from his impoverished upbringings to his adoption by a wealthy couple and on to his position as one of the most highly coveted prospects in college football. We will meet September 20 at the home of Susan and Skip/Chuck Beers (6:45 p.m.). Contact: Rebecca Hirschler

Ascension Grounds Need Your HELP!!!  For the past several years, the grounds at Ascension have been maintained by a small and dedicated group of folks who have done a terrific job, but we need some help, as the job of maintaining so many flower beds has become too much for such a small group to keep up with.  So, we are asking for volunteers who would be willing to work for 2-3 hours once or twice a month to pull weeds and beautify a small section of our flower beds. You would be assigned a 10-15 foot wide area to maintain at your leisure – no schedule to follow, just be there at a day/time that suits you.

Please consider helping us with this ministry. This maintenance program will start in September, when it will be a little cooler. If you think you would be able to help, please see Don Daly, Marilyn Meek or Bill Willey and you can choose an area to maintain.  Thanks!

RSVP…SUPPER CLUB FALL/WINTER 2010 SESSION will be forming soon.  If you are interested in joining in the Supper Club Fall/Winter 2010 Session, please sign up!   You may do so by adding your name to the sign-up sheet located in the Narthex or you may call Betsy Hussey or Beth Steinbruck-Phillips.  September 15th will be the last day you can sign up.  Please note, Supper Club is not just for members of our church.  Consider inviting a friend to join you in participating in your Supper Club Group.  We look forward to good fellowship, good conversation, good food and good times.

Outreach date change:  The Outreach meeting for September will be on TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 14, at 7:00 in the lounge.  We have several things to discuss, notably the Full Circle meals.  If you are interested in being a part of this ministry, please talk to Margaret Daly.  Even children can help with this project each month.  We are looking at doing something different as we start up again this fall.

From the Talmud and Torah, to “repentance” (teshuva) and “repairing the world” (tikkun olam), Kushner shows all of us how we can use the fundamentals of Jewish spirituality to enrich our own lives.

Please pray for James Hogge.  James has been moved again.  He is the homeless man that has been around Ascension for the last few years. He has been in Norfolk City Jail for a year and a half and has been transferred to Deerfield Correctional Center in Capron. He has been sentenced to eight years for parole violations. Any cards would be welcome. Be sure to use the church address as a return address. One day he was saying how much he appreciated cards from folks. He said to me “there are so many guys in here who have no one that cares and that is rough.” To be honest, if he writes back and asks for money, please don’t let that deter you from letting him know he is thought of and prayed for. However, if you did want to send him money for use for personal items, please donate to our rectors’ discretionary fund marked for James Hogge. James reads his Bible everyday and talks to the people around him about his faith. While in jail he was known for his beliefs, and inmates—who wrote his letters for him—often added a note about what he meant to them.  If you have any questions please let me know.
